Wheaton, Ill. – The Wheaton women's basketball team picked up its second straight conference victory with a 77-67 win against Augustana College on Tuesday night in Wheaton's King Arena. The Thunder improves to 8-5 overall and 2-1 in CCIW play with the win, while Augustana is now 6-8 overall and 1-2 in league play. Wheaton will travel to North Park on Saturday for a 5 PM contest with the Vikings. Saturday's game will be broadcast on WETN radio at 88.1 FM in the Wheaton area and on the internet at www.wetn.org.
Wheaton held a 32-29 lead with 2:05 remaining in the first half, when the Thunder put together an 8-1 scoring run to take a 40-29 lead with 31-seconds left before halftime. The Vikings scored four unanswered points in the final 30-seconds of the first half to cut Wheaton's lead to 40-33 at the break.
Augustana chipped away at Wheaton's lead in the second half, as the Vikings twice tied the game; however, they never gained a lead. The final occasion that the score was tied was a 61-61 deadlock with 5:30 remaining in the game. Wheaton then went on a 7-1 scoring run to take a 68-62 lead with 2:53 remaining in the game. The hosts' remained in control from that point on, building a lead as large as 11 points at 76-65 with 13-seconds left in the game.
Sophomore
Lindsey Brenneman led four Wheaton players who scored in double digits with 18 points, four assists and two steals. Junior forward
Annie Bowen scored 14 points and grabbed four steals.
Elisabeth Potts tallied 13 points and senior
Sarah Jones scored 12 points, with 11 rebounds and four assists.
Lisa Ballenger scored seven points off the Thunder bench.
Abbi Staples led Augustana with 14 points, while Gianna Pecora and Natalie Runge each scored 10 points. Kristin Warnken grabbed a team-high six rebounds and Runge collected five caroms for the Vikings.
Wheaton shot a 40% (24-60) field goal percentage, with 25% (6-24) from three-point range and 79.3% (23-29) at the free throw line. Augustana shot 44% (22-50) from the floor, with 58.8% (10-17) from three-point range and 72.2% (13-18) at the charity stripe. The Vikings out-rebound the Thunder 38-31, with Wheaton holding a 9-8 edge on the offensive glass. Augustana committed 30 turnovers on the night, as the Thunder out-scored the Vikings 33-15 in points off of turnovers.
