Kenosha, Wis. - The Carthage College softball pitchers held Wheaton's hitters in check as the Lady Reds swept a doubleheader 5-0 and 8-1 on Thursday.
The Thunder fell to 10-14 overall and 0-4 in the CCIW. The Lady Reds improved to 16-6 and 5-3 in conference play.
In the first game, Wheaton's offense was held to two hits by starting pitcher Kelsey Epping. Carthage gave themselves a cushion with four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to ensure the victory.
Kelli Hennessey and
Megan Chrans got one hit each for the Thunder.
Ainsley McCullough took the loss on the mound, allowing 10 hits and five runs with three strikeouts.
Wheaton's offense started hitting in the second game and pounded out nine hits, but could only get across one run on an RBI single
Adrienne Munoz in the first inning.
The Lady Reds scored five in the opening frame and added three more in the seventh.
Mandy Brockman took the loss with one-third of an inning pitched while allowing five runs on four hits with two walks.
Wheaton's offense was led by Munoz and
Kay Oliver with two hits apiece.
The Thunder continue their season with a 2:00 PM doubleheader on Saturday at Illinois Wesleyan.
