Softball closes the season by splitting a doubleheader at Chicago

Chicago, Ill.
– The Thunder softball team concluded its season on Tuesday afternoon with a non-conference doubleheader at University of Chicago. Chicago defeated Wheaton 1-0 in the first game and the Thunder won the second game with a 6-4 victory in the team's season finale. Wheaton wraps up the season with an 18-21 overall record.

Chicago won the opener 1-0 as the hosts scored one run, on seven hits, with no errors and Wheaton scored no runs, on seven hits, with three errors. Chicago scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning to break a 0-0 tie.

Freshman starting pitcher Ainsley McCullough (9-9) allowed one run, on seven hits, with three walks and two strikeouts. Jenna Lawrenz, Amanda Mattocks and Adrienne Munoz each when 2-for-3 in the game as Lawrenz stole a base.

Wheaton defeated the Maroons 6-4 in the second game, as the Thunder scored six runs, on seven hits, with two errors and Chicago plated four runs on seven hits, with two errors. Starting pitcher Mandy Brockman (7-10) earned the win in 4-2/3 innings of work as she allowed four runs, with one earned run, on six hits, with four walks and a strikeout. McCullough tallied her first save of the season in 2-1/3 innings of relief as she held the Maroons scoreless, on just one hit, and two strikeouts.

Brockman was 2-for-3, with a home run, as she scored twice and drove in one run. Freshman Lesley Guenard was 2-for-3, with two runs scored and a walk drawn.

Wheaton jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Guenard scored. The guests increased their lead to 4-0 with three runs in the top of the third inning. The inning saw Wheaton get a RBI double from Amanda Mattocks and run-scoring singles by Guenard and Kelli Hennessey.

The Thunder increased its lead to 5-0 with a run in the top of the fourth inning as Brockman belted a solo home run. Chicago cut Wheaton's lead to 5-4 with four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Wheaton scored an insurance run in the top of the sixth inning, as Brockman scored a run to give Wheaton the 6-4 lead that would become the final score.
