Softball hosts the inaugural Wheaton Invitational

– The Thunder softball team hosted its inaugural Wheaton Invitational on Saturday at Ruth Leedy Field. Alma College defeated the Thunder 7-2 in the opening game and UW-Whitewater defeated Alma 1-0 in the second game. Each of the first two games had one delay due to rain showers in the Chicagoland area.

The third game of the day featured Wheaton, hosting UW-Whitewater. In the top of the third inning, with the Warhawks leading 6-2 the game was delayed to rain. Following an approximately 35-minute delay the game was called due to field conditions. The contest between the Thunder and the Warhawks will not be made up.

UW-Whitewater earned the Wheaton Invitational Championship as the only undefeated team and Warhawk pitcher Jessica Stang (16-1) was selected as the tournament's MVP. Stang shutout Alma by holding the Scots to three hits, with seven strikeouts and just one walk. The Warhawks earned the 1-0 win against Alma by scoring one run, on three hits, with one error and Alma scored no runs, on three this, with no errors.

Alma was a 7-2 victor against Wheaton in the opener as the Scots scored seven runs, on 11 hits, with two errors and Wheaton scored two runs, on four hits, with no errors. Freshman Ainsley McCullough took the loss in 2-2/3 innings of relief as she allowed seven runs, on eight hits, with two walks and two strikeouts. Sophomore Mandy Brockman worked 3-1/3 innings, allowed no runs, on three hits, with four walks and two strikeouts.

Centerfielder Katie Iser was 1-for-2, with a run scored and a stolen base. Freshman Lesley Guenard was 1-for-2, with a walk, a run scored and a RBI. Sophomores Kelli Hennessey and Adrienne Munoz each hit singles and Munoz added a RBI for the Thunder.
