Softball splits a CCIW doubleheader with Millikin

Adrienne Munoz collected five hits on the day, including a long home run

– The Thunder softball team split a doubleheader with Millikin on Friday afternoon at Ruth Leedy Field with a 13-8 victory in game one and a 4-3 eight-inning loss to the Big Blue in the finale. Today's twinbill concluded the CCIW schedule for Wheaton as the Thunder now stand at 17-19 overall and 5-9 in conference play.

The Thunder will host the first annual Wheaton Invitational Tournament on Saturday. Wheaton will face Alma College at 10 AM, Alma takes on UW-Whitewater at noon and the tournament will conclude at 2 PM when Wheaton hosts UW-Whitewater.

Wheaton was a 13-8 victor in the first game as the hosts scored 13 runs, on 16 hits, with one error and Millikin plated eight runs, on nine hits and committed four errors. Sophomore starting pitcher Christine Williams pitched 1-2/3 innings for the hosts, with five runs, three of them earned, on four hits. Mandy Brockman (5-11) worked 5-1/3 innings of relief to earn the win. Brockman allowed three runs, on five hits, with three strikeouts and one walk.

Freshman Jenna Lawrenz was 3-for-3, with a double as she scored two runs and drove in two. Catcher Amanda Mattocks was 3-for-4, with a run scored and a double. Mandy Brockman was 2-for-4, with three runs scored. Sophomore Adrienne Munoz was 2-for-4, belting a long home run to leftfield, with two runs scored and a RBI. Shortstop Kelli Hennessey was 2-for-4, with two runs scored. Freshman Lesley Guenard was 2-for-4, with a run scored and a RBI.

In the second game, Millikin rallied from a 3-0 deficit by scoring three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to send the game to extra innings and the guests plated the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth to pick up the win.

Freshman Ainsley McCullough (9-7) took the loss in 7-2/3 innings of work as she allowed four runs, one of them earned, on 10 hits, with three strikeouts. Munoz was 3-for-4, with a RBI and a run scored. Guenard was 2-for-4, with a RBI and a run scored.
