Wheaton, Ill. - On a day with 20-mph wind gusts blowing straight out to left, Leedy Field was primed to become an offensive launching pad on Thursday afternoon.

The blustery weather didn't effect Wheaton's softball pitchers, however. In fact, the Wheaton staff put up two of its best pitching performances of the season.

Ainsley McCullough and Mandy Brockman both threw shutouts as the Wheaton College softball team got timely offense to defeat Elmhurst College 2-0 and 9-0.

The Thunder improved to 16-18 overall and 4-8 in the CCIW as they have won six of their last eight games. The Bluejays fell to 13-17 and 2-10 in conference.

In the first game, McCullough didn't allow any of Elmhurst's seven hits to impact the scoreboard. Her pitch movement kept the batters swinging early and hitting fly balls that her defense kept getting to. Second baseman Adrienne Munoz also initiated two inning-ending double plays at key moments.

Wheaton loaded the bases in the third inning and brought one run home on an RBI fielders choice by Lesley Guenard. The Thunder then got an insurance run in the sixth inning as a pickoff throw by the catcher flew into the outfield and allowed Guenard to score from third base.

McCullough (PICTURED RIGHT) got the win over seven innings, allowing seven hits with one walk. Wheaton was held to four hits in the game as Katie Iser went 2-for-2 with a run scored.

The Thunder offense didn't take long to get on track in game two. They started the top of the first inning by scoring five unearned runs, thanks to two Elmhurst fielding errors. A two-run single by Megan Chrans (PICTURED TOP), a two-run double by Jenna Lawrenz and an RBI single by Christine Williams accounted for the damage.

Wheaton ended the game after six innings after adding one run in the third, one in the fourth, and two in the sixth. The Thunder pounded out 13 hits in the game, led by Chrans who went 3-for-3 with three RBI. Munoz went 2-for-2 with three runs scored and an RBI. Guenard and Brockman tallied two hits each.

Mandy Brockman
In the circle, Brockman (PICTURED LEFT) shutdown the Elmhurst offense and only allowed one hit over her six innings pitched. She also walked four and struck out one in six inning of work.

Wheaton continues its season with a 3:00 PM home doubleheader against Millikin University.
