Softball takes a pair from Beloit to extend its win streak to five

Wheaton, Ill.
– The Thunder softball team swept a doubleheader from Beloit College under chilly conditions at Ruth Leedy Field, as Wheaton extended its winning streak to five games. Wheaton (7-9) shut out the Buccaneers 3-0 in the opener and the Thunder earned a 9-1 victory in the second game. The Thunder will host Lake Forest College on Saturday in a doubleheader that is scheduled to begin at 1 PM. Live in-game statistics of Saturday's games will be available online and the first game of the twinbill will be broadcast on WETN radio at 88.1 FM in the Wheaton area and on the internet at www.wetn.org.

Wheaton was a 3-0 victor in the first game as the hosts scored three runs, on three hits, with two errors and Beloit had no runs, on six hits, with four errors. Sophomore Mandy Brockman (2-6) tossed a complete game to earn the victory. Brockman scattered six Beloit hits, with eight strikeouts and she walked just one batter.

Wheaton scored all three runs and collected all three hits in the bottom of the first inning, as the hosts jumped out to the early lead and never looked back. Lesley Guenard, Kelli Henessey and Adrienne Munoz led off the bottom of the first inning with three consecutive hits and each player scored a run to account for the 3-0 outcome.

Wheaton jumped out to an early lead in the second game as the Thunder claimed a 9-1 victory. The hosts scored nine runs, on 14 hits, and committed three errors, with Beloit plating one run, on six hits, with three errors. Freshman pitcher Ainsley McCullough (4-1) was the winning pitcher in four innings of work. She scattered four hits, with no runs allowed, she walked two batters and struck out two. Brockman tossed two innings of relief as she allowed one unearned run, on two hits with two strikeouts.

Munoz scored a run in the bottom of the first inning as the hosts jumped out to a 1-0 lead. Wheaton increased its lead to 3-0 with two runs in the bottom of the second inning, an inning that saw Megan Chrans lead off with a single and score three batters later on a single by Christine Williams. The Thunder lead was extended to 6-0 with three runs in the bottom of the third inning as Munoz, Amanda Mattocks and Kay Oliver each hit a double in the inning.

The Thunder lead became 8-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning as Katie Iser led off the inning with a single, she scored on the next at bat when Guenard belted a double to left centerfield. Hennessey, who hit a single in the inning scored on a single through the middle of the infield by Mattocks. Beloit scored its lone run in the top of the fifth inning for an 8-1 Wheaton lead. Wheaton ended the game with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning as Laura Jones hit a RBI-single to drive in Guenard who led off the inning with a walk.

Mattocks was 3-for-3, with two RBI and a run scored for the Thunder. Chrans was 2-for-2, with two runs and a RBI. Munoz went 2-for-4, with a run scored and a double.
