Wheaton, Ill. – The Thunder men's soccer team, ranked 17th in this week's NSCAA Division III Coaches Poll, lost a 1-0 decision at home on Wednesday night to Augustana. Wheaton falls to 9-3 overall and 1-1 in CCIW play, while Augustana improves to 4-6 overall and 2-1 in league action.
The Thunder will remain in conference competition on Friday night, when Wheaton hosts Carthage College at 7 PM. Friday's match will be a part of Wheaton's Homecoming activities.
The Thunder controlled much of the pace of the match as the hosts out-shot Augustana 22-3, including a 15-1 advantage in the second half. The Thunder attempted 13 corner kicks in the match, Augustana had none.
The Vikings made the most of their lone shot in the second half as Martin Skantze booted in a shot from John Linden to give the guests a 1-0 lead in the 51st minute. Wheaton had some opportunities to tie match including a shot by
Drew Golz that was deflected expertly by Augustana goalkeeper Mike Dolan with 22:30 remaining in the second half.
Dolan made seven saves on the night to record the shutout for the Vikings in 90 minutes of work. Wheaton netminder
Ryan Seager allowed one goal, and made one save in 90 minutes of action.
