BOXSCORE

Wheaton, Ill.
– The Thunder men's soccer team closed out its regular season schedule on Friday night with a 1-0 victory against Millikin University (5-13-1/0-6-0). Wheaton is now 13-3-2 on the year, with a 4-1-2 record in conference play. With tonight's victory, Wheaton secured the number-two seed in the upcoming CCIW Men's Soccer Tournament.

Wheaton will host a yet-to-be-determined opponent (the number-three seed) on Tuesday November 3 at 7 PM. Top-seeded Elmhurst will host a yet-to-be-determined fourth-seeded opponent on Wednesday in the other semifinal. The 2009 CCIW Men's Soccer Tournament Championship match will feature the two semifinal winners, playing at the highest remaining seed on Saturday November 7. The winner of the CCIW Men's Soccer Tournament will earn the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament.

Wheaton out-shot the Big Blue 13-2 in the first half of tonight's match, with a 4-1 edge in shots on goal. However, the Thunder was unable to score in the opening half. Wheaton goalkeeper Micah Lamb made a key save in the 12th minute of the match to stop Millikin's only shot on goal of the night.

Wheaton also commanded a large shot advantage in the second half, with a 10-0 edge following halftime. Wheaton was awarded a free kick in the 71st minute and junior Cameron Risma tapped the ball to senior Matt Swartz who broke the scoreless tie with his 10th goal of the season. Swartz's goal would be enough for Wheaton to earn the shutout victory.

The Thunder out-shot the Big Blue 23-2, with a 9-2 edge in corner kicks. Lamb served as goalkeeper for the first half, making one save in 45 minutes of work. Freshman Ryan Seager played the final 45 minutes in the Thunder net. Millikin netminder Derrek Schwartz made five saves and allowed one goal in 90 minutes of work.
