Wednesday night's game marked the final regular season game in the stellar careers of seniors
Taryne Lee,
Maria Della Torre and
Lauren Anderson. The trio of Wheaton Academy alums were honored along with their parents at halftime on the field.
The three seniors helped make sure it wouldn't be the last time they ever played on the field turf at Joe Bean Stadium. The Thunder played with energy and effectively controlled play in the IWU defensive side of the field all game.
Della Torre (PICTURED TOP LEFT) broke through with the first goal at 10:08 into the match from right in front of the box on passes from
Katelyn Kishkunas and Lee. Only two minutes later, Wheaton struck again.
Brittany Bergh streaked up the right side on a counterattack, reached the end line and sent in a centering cross to
Ali Kopelman, who chipped the ball off the crossbar and into the net for a 2-0 lead.
The beginning of the second half saw another fast start for the Thunder offense. Only two minutes into the half,
Keri Shannon sent a pass into the middle to
Val Lelle, who launched a spinning shot straight into the air. Lee (PICTURED RIGHT) got under the ball in the goalie box and headed it in for her 20th goal of the season and
97th of her career.
Less than two minutes after that score, Kopelman struck again to provide the insurance goal off a Della Torre assist.
Wheaton outshot Illinois Wesleyan 14-7 in the game with a 4-1 corner kick advantage. Hillary Barreto made one save to pick up the shutout victory. IWU goalie Alli Novak made four saves with four goals allowed.
