The Thunder men's soccer team ties Elmhurst 1-1

Elmhurst, Ill.
– The Thunder men's soccer team played Elmhurst College to a 1-1 tie on Friday night in two overtime at Elmhurst's Berens Park. The two teams battled through rainy and windy conditions throughout the contest.

In the 14th minute, a Wheaton pass was deflected by an Elmhurst defender onto the right foot of Thunder senior Matt Swartz who blasted the ball past Elmhurst's diving goalkeeper, Sebastian Domczewski to give the Thunder a 1-0 lead. It was Swartz's ninth goal of the season. The remainder of the first half was scoreless, as Wheaton out-shot the Thunder 7-6 in the period.

In the 50th minute, the ball was headed into the net past the Wheaton defense as the Bluejays tied up the match with an own goal. Elmhurst had a strong scoring opportunity with a shot in front of Wheaton's net with 1:12 remaining in regulation. However, Wheaton goalkeeper Ryan Seager made brilliant save to prevent the goal and the Thunder defense blocked the ensuing shot after the ball deflected off of Seager.

The best scoring opportunity in overtime for either team was just 1:50 into the first overtime when a shot by Wheaton's Drew Golz hit the inside of the right post and rolled away from the net, as Elmhurst narrowly escaped the tremendous scoring opportunity.

Elmhurst took 20 shots in the match, Wheaton had 19 and the Bluejays had an 8-7 advantage in corner kicks. Seager made four saves in the Thunder net and the Wheaton defense collected three saves as well. Domczewski made six saves in the Bluejays' net.

Wheaton is now 12-3-1 overall and 3-1-1 in CCIW play. Elmhurst is 11-3-3 overall and 5-0-2 in league play. Elmhurst is now finished with its conference schedule and by virtue of tonight's tie won the CCIW Championship and will be the top seed in the upcoming CCIW Men's Soccer Tournament.
