Women's soccer team shuts out North Park 6-0

Wheaton, Ill.
– The Thunder women's soccer team shut out North Park University 6-0, under rainy and wet conditions at Joe Bean Stadium on Thursday evening. The Thunder, ranked fourth in this week's NSCAA.com Division III Coaches Poll, have improved to 9-2 overall and 2-0 in CCIW play. North Park is now 4-6 overall and 1-3 in league play. Wheaton remains at home for a match against Hope College on Saturday night at 7 PM.

Wheaton jumped out to a 1-0 lead, just 8:23 into tonight's match, when junior Brittany Bergh scored off of a double-assist from Taryne Lee and Maria Della Torre. Lee extended Wheaton's lead to 2-0 when she scored off of a loose ball at the 21:38 mark of the match.

Wheaton held a 2-0 lead at halftime of the match. The match experienced an extended halftime due to lightning in the area, and a delay resulted.

Once play resumed Wheaton continued to put the pressure on the Vikings as Wheaton out-shot the guests 14-0 following the halftime break. Lee netted her 11th goal of the year at the 55:13 mark of the match when she blasted in a shot off of a Bergh assist. Senior Maria Della Torre's first goal of the season came off of a penalty kick at 56:57 to extend Wheaton's lead to 4-0. Bergh collected her second goal of the night at 61:32, when she scored off of a Lee assist. Ali Kopelman's sixth goal of the season accounted for the 6-0 final outcome. Kopelman's goal was scored at the 71:43 mark of the match, off of a Kishkunas assist.

Wheaton out-shot the Vikings 34-2 in the match. The Thunder held a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks. Wheaton goalkeeper Hillary Barreto played 90 minutes in net, with no shots on goal against her. North Park netminder Paige Vrieland made 16 saves and allowed six goals in the match. 

With six total points tonight, Lee has moved into 20th place on the all-time Division III points list with 220 career points. She also has moved into 23rd-place on the all-time Division III goals scored list with 88 in her stellar career.
