Carol Stream, Ill. – The Thunder baseball team dropped a pair of games on Saturday afternoon in a CCIW doubleheader against Augustana College. The Vikings won the opener 25-8 and Augustana was a 15-11 victor in the nightcap. Wheaton falls to 12-7 overall and 2-4 in the CCIW, while Augustana is now 18-4 overall and 4-2 in league play.
The Thunder will host Carthage at 3 PM on Monday in a make-up game from earlier in the season. Wheaton will entertain North Central in conference action on Wednesday at Legion Field. The Cardinals and Thunder will resume their game that was called due to darkness last Tuesday at 2 PM, with the score tied at 8-8 in the top of the ninth inning. The two squads will then play their regularly scheduled nine-inning game at 3 PM at Legion Field. Both upcoming games will have live statistics available on the internet as well as online webcasts.
Augustana won the opener 25-8, as the guests scored 25 runs, on 16 hits, with one error and Wheaton scored eight runs on 13 hits, with six errors. The Vikings scored 13 runs in the first to innings to jump out to a lead they would never relinquish.
Freshman Charlie Antal (PICTURED) was 3-for-5, with a double, scoring two runs and a RBI. Fellow rookie Danny Pyne was 2-for-2, with a run scored. Catcher Nate Pugh was 2-for-3, with a double and two runs driven in. Sophomore Mark Price was 2-for-2, with two runs scored, two RBI as he hit a double and stole a base.
Augustana's Aaron Hopson was 2-for-2, with two home runs to lead the Vikings. John Wagle, Eric Izzo and John Vezzetti also added round trippers for Augustana.
Augustana won the second game as the Vikings scored 15 runs, on 14 hits, with two errors and Wheaton scored 11 runs, on 16 hits, with four errors. Wheaton overcame an 8-5 deficit after two innings to tie the game at 8-8 after three innings. Augustana added three more runs through 5-1/2 innings, however, Wheaton's Josh Weaver hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie the game at 11-11. Augustana went on to earn the 15-11 win with three runs in the top of the eighth and another run in the top of the ninth inning.
Antal continued his strong day with a 3-for-5 effort at the plate, with two RBI and a run scored. Antal was 6-for-10 in the two games of the twinbill. Price was 3-for-5, with two runs and a RBI. Senior Matt Bradley was 3-for-5, with two runs scored and a RBI.
