Chicago, Ill. – The Wheaton baseball team lost a non-conference game at University of Chicago (8-13) on Wednesday afternoon by a score of 6-4. Chicago scored six runs, on seven hits, with four errors and Wheaton scored four runs, on nine hits, with one error.
Wheaton is now 20-12 on the season and will resume conference play on Friday when it will start a three-game series with North Park. If the Thunder, 9-8 in conference play, can win one game this weekend Wheaton will earn its first-ever appearance in the CCIW Baseball Tournament. Wheaton will travel to North Park on Friday for a single nine-inning game at 5 PM. The two teams will play a doubleheader, slated to begin at 1 PM on Saturday at Wheaton's Legion Field. Chicago jumped out to a 3-0 lead after three innings of today's game and the Maroons added three more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to take a 6-0 lead. Wheaton scored four runs in the top of the ninth inning; however, the guests could not complete the rally. Luke Munch and Brian Kolb contributed RBI singles and senior Matt Bradley (PICTURED) drove in two runs in the inning for the Thunder.
Kolb was 3-for-5, with a double, a stolen base and a run driven in. Catcher Nate Pugh was 2-for-5, with a run scored in the ninth inning. Matt Bradley was 2-for-5 with two runs driven in.
Thunder starting pitcher John Little (2-2) took the loss in two innings of work as he allowed two runs, on one hit, with two walks and a strikeout. Junior Ed McCaskey allowed one run in an inning of relief as he gave up two hits and struck out two. Sophomore Tim Urbanowicz struck out one in an inning of scoreless relief. Freshman Steve Dennison pitched an inning of scoreless relief as he, striking out one with a hit. Neither Zach Fallon nor John Pohl allowed a hit as they each tossed an inning of scoreless relief. Brandon Bradley struck out three in one inning of work as he allowed three runs on three hits.
