Elmhurst, Ill. – The Thunder baseball team slugged its way to two victories at Elmhurst on Saturday afternoon to sweep the season series against the Bluejays. The Thunder won the first game 19-15 and the guests took the second game 15-9. Wheaton improves to 20-11 on the year and 9-8 in CCIW play. With today's wins, the team stands alone with the school record for wins in a single season at 20; the previous mark had been 18, set in 1992 and 1999. In addition to the single-season wins record, two more team records and four individual single-season records were set this weekend.
Luke Munch" width="200" align="right" src="/images/baseball/2008/4/26/munch4.jpg" />In the first inning of the second game Brian Kolb (PICTURED LEFT) hit a double to pass Quinn Wulbecker's single-season record for hits. Wulbecker, currently a Thunder assistant coach, set the record in 2006 with 57 hits. Kolb now has 60 hits this season. Kolb collected four doubles today, with two in each game, to give him 15 this season as he set a new Wheaton record for doubles in a single-season. Senior Luke Munch (PICTURED RIGHT) also established a record in today's twinbill as he passed Dave Phillips' record for runs scored in a season, when Phillips collected 41 runs in 1992. Munch entered today's games with 40 runs and he scored twice in the first game to set the record and he crossed the plate four more times in the second game to give him 46 runs this season. Sophomore pitcher John Little earned the save in the second game of today's doubleheader to tie Jon Berry for the single-season saves record with three.
During the doubleheader, Wheaton also established a new school record for runs in a single season. With 271 runs this year, the team has surpassed the old mark of 260 set in 2005. In Friday's opening game of the three-game series Wheaton overtook the old school record of 206 RBI in a season, closing the three game set with 247 RBI this year.
In the first game the Thunder earned a 19-15 victory as the guests scored 19 runs, on 19 hits with one error and Elmhurst scored 15 runs, on 15 hits, with four errors. Freshman Danny Pyne went 4-for-5, with four runs scored. Omar Vargas went 3-for-3, with six RBI and two runs scored. Kolb was 3-for-5, with two doubles as he drove in three runs and scored twice. Senior catcher Nate Pugh was 3-for-5, scoring three runs with two RBI. Senior second baseman Matt Bradley was 2-for-4, with two run scored and Munch was 2-for-5, with a stolen base, two runs and a RBI.
Sophomore Tim Urbanowicz (3-2) earned the win in 5-2/3 innings of work. Urbanowicz allowed 12 runs, on nine hits, with three strikeouts. Brandon Bradley pitched 1-1/3 innings or relief, allowing three runs, with one earned run, on six hits, with two strikeouts.
Wheaton won the second game 15-9 as the Thunder scored 15 runs, on 18 hits, with three errors and Elmhurst scored nine runs, on 11 hits, with two errors. Josh Weaver went 3-for-4, with a double and two stolen bases. Munch was 3-for-4, with two walks, four runs scored and two stolen bases. Kolb was 3-for-5, with an intentional walk, two doubles, three stolen bases, three runs scored and two runs driven in. Centerfielder Dan Falvey was 3-for-5, with a run scored. Senior catcher Nate Pugh (PICTURED LEFT) was 3-for-6, with three runs driven in.
Freshman starting pitcher Steve Dennison (4-1) earned the win in 5-2/3 innings of work. Dennison allowed seven runs, with six being earned on eight hits and three strikeouts. Sophomore John Little earned the save in 3-1/3 innings of relief as he allowed two runs, on three hits, with one strikeout.
