Men's basketball drops a 70-67 decision to Whitworth in the Lee Pfund Classic championship game

Wheaton, Ill. (11/18) –The Thunder men's basketball team lost a heartbreaker by a final score of 70-67 against Whitworth College on Saturday night in the championship game of Wheaton's Lee Pfund Classic. Whitworth is now 2-0 on the season and Wheaton is 1-1. The Thunder will travel to Benedictine University on Tuesday night at 7 PM in a game that will be broadcast on WETN radio at 88.1 FM in the Wheaton area and on the internet at www.wetn.org. In tonight's consolation game Franklin College earned a 94-71 win against Eastern University (Pa.).

Wheaton All-American Kent Raymond hit a three-pointer with 4:05 left in the game to cut the Pirates' lead to 59-57. However, Whitworth put together a 10-3 runs to take a 69-60 lead with 37-seconds left in the game. Matt Ankeny made a three-pointer with 29-seconds left to cut the Whitworth lead to 69-63. Whitworth's Jon Young made one of two free throw attempts to give the Pirates a 70-63 advantage with 14 seconds left. Wheaton sophomore Andy Wiele made one of his two free throw attempts with six seconds left for a 70-64 Pirates' lead and then Raymond stole Whitworth's inbounds pass and hit a three-pointer with two seconds left to cut the guests' lead to 70-67. Whitworth turned the ball over on the inbounds attempt, giving Wheaton a chance to tied the game in the final seconds, however, a three-point attempt by Raymond fell off the rim as the Pirates escaped with the victory.

Raymond led the Thunder with 22 points and seven assists to earn All-Tournament honors. Senior co-captain Michael Fiddler was 5-for-6 from the field, with 13 points to join Raymond on the All-Tournament team. Johnnie Standard scored nine points, while Wiele added nine rebounds, with eight points.
Whitworth's Bryan Williams was named the Will Landry Memorial Tournament MVP. He scored 24 points, with eight assists and six steals. Ryan Symes scored 12 points, on 4-for-6 shooting from the field, with seven rebounds. Colin Willemsen shot 4-for-5 from the field, with 10 points. James Jones scored seven points, in earning All-Tournament honors.

In the consolation game Dustin Marshall scored 18 points to lead Franklin to a 94-71 victory against Eastern (Pa.). The Grizzlies Jace Redman added 13 points and six assists to earn All-Tournament accolades. Mike Johnson of Eastern was named to the All-Tournament team with 17 points and seven rebounds.
