Wisconsin-LaCrosse wins the Pete Willson-Wheaton Invitational
Wheaton, Ill. (1/27) – University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse (LEFT) used solid team depth to emerge with the team title at this weekend’s Pete Willson-Wheaton Invitational. The Eagles scored 146.5 points, ahead of University of Indianapolis in second place with 134 points, Elmhurst and North Central tied for third with 100 points and Wisconsin-Parkside finished fifth with 94 points. The host Thunder of Wheaton College finished 24th in the 29-team tournament.
Wisconsin-LaCrosse had just one tournament champion, but the Eagles had two second-place finishers and nine total place-winners in the 241-man tournament. North Central College had the most individual champions in the tournament with three: Adam Johnson at 133-pounds, Bobby Gingerich at 157-pounds and Gabe Youel at 184-pounds. University of Indianapolis was the only other school with multiple champions, as the Grehounds’ Mike Jackson won at 174-pounds and top-seeded Jose Navarro won at 285-pounds.
Joe Pflug (RIGHT) of Heidelberg College won the tournament championship at 149-pounds, in an 8-4 decision against Jason Roush of Mount St. Joseph in the championship match. Pflug was selected as the recipient of the George Olson Outstanding Wrestler Award. Pflug was also awarded the Pete George Sportsmanship Award, selected every year by the tournament’s officials.
Junior Toby Boltz(LEFT) was the top finisher for the host Wheaton College Thunder. He finished eighth in the 174-pound weight class. Boltz opened the tournament by winning an 8-6 decision against Nick Kraus of Tri-State University in the second round. Boltz was pinned at the 4:57 mark by top-seeded Josh Chelf of Wisconsin-LaCrosse in the quarterfinals. Boltz defeated Anthony Dill of Messiah College in a 4-3 decision in the consolation round. Fourth-seeded John Budi of Lawrence University defeated Boltz in a 6-0 decision on Saturday morning in the consolation round and Boltz lost a 12-2 decision to Wisconsin-Whitewater’s Adam Moe in the seventh-place match.
