Dane Shaw, '97 - Selma is known as the Queen City of the Blackbelt Region of Alabama. During the Civil War, Selma was the Confederate war machine that manufactured a number of weapons for the army. In 1965, Selma was again in the center of the news as millions witnessed Martin Luther King Jr. lead a march from Selma to Montgomery in order to gain voting rights for the African American citizens. During their week in Selma, Wheaton Football players will get a chance to partner with local leaders in Selma as they are rebuilding the city that has been hit by major setbacks in its social and political economy. Some of the projects will include renovating the Joshua House, a center aimed at helping Selma citzens gain vital skills for employment and life. Also, there will be an opportunity to partner with BlueJean Selma as they are in bringing hope to inmates in the overcrowded county jail system. Finally, the team will partner with Arsenal Place Accelerator, Selma's first business incubator, as it renovates buildings and consults businesses in the historic district of the city.
