SECOND ROUND RECAP
The Wheaton College women’s soccer team defeated Carleton College 4-1 on Saturday in a Second Round match of the 2010 NCAA Division III Women’s Soccer Tournament. With tonight’s victory, Wheaton has advanced to the Division III Sectional Semifinal to be played next Friday at a site and time that will be announced by the NCAA on Monday. In the Sectional Semifinal, Wheaton (20-2-1) will face the winner of a Second Round match between Lynchburg and Emory that will be played on Sunday at noon (CST) at Emory.
Carleton (15-3-2) struck first in tonight’s Second Round Match, putting pressure on Wheaton early in the match. Carleton’s Marlena Hartman-Filson scored on a rebound, just 10:33 into the match to give the Knights a 1-0 lead. With 11-seconds left in the first half, Wheaton scored the equalizing goal as a Wheaton shot hit the cross bar and was collected by Thunder junior #Jaime Orewiler#, who put together a sliding shot to tie the match at 1-1.
Wheaton took the lead for good in the 59th minute when a #Katelyn Kishkunas# pass was expertly sent to #Kerri Shannon# who volleyed the ball and put it inside the top of the net to a 2-1 Wheaton lead. Shannon scored again when a loose ball was unable to be cleared by Carleton as she put the ball into the back of the net on a #Hillary Quinn# assist. Wheaton’s fourth and final goal came in the 85th minute when Orewiler beat Carleton goalkeeper Kate Trenerry on a pass from #Kristen Clark#.
Thunder head coach
Pete Felske noted, “I think tonight was a tale of two halves. In the first half we came out flat and Carleton ran all over us.” He added, “That was a big goal right before halftime, I think it deflated Carleton a little bit and we needed that badly. Then in the second half we came out with a lot of energy. We told the team we needed to put some pressure on Carleton and we did that. We had a lot of energy and it was a much better second half for us. ”
Sophomore goalkeeper #Hilary Barreto# played the first 18 minutes of the match for the Thunder, allowing one goal. Freshman #Maddie Allen# was net for 72 minutes of action, making three saves with no goals allowed. Trenerry made five saves and allowed four goals for the Knights. Wheaton had a 14-13 advantage in shots in the match, with a 9-4 edge in shots on goal. Carleton was awarded four corner kicks in the match and Wheaton attempted three.

CARLETON KNIGHTS
The Carleton College women’s soccer team is making its third consecutive trip to the NCAA Championships after receiving an at-large bid. The Knights advanced to the Elite Eight (sectional final) in 2008 before falling to Wheaton College. The same two programs met in the 2009 first round, with Carleton absorbing a 3-1 defeat.
In 2010, the Knights (14-2-2) captured their first MIAC regular-season crown since 1982 and enter the national tournament ranked No. 15 in the latest NSCAA national poll. Carleton possesses a 15-match unbeaten streak (13-0-2 with a 37-7 goal differential over that stretch), with its last setback coming back on Sept. 7.
With 14 wins, this year’s team tied the ’82 squad for second-highest win total in program history. The school record is 18 victories established during the Knights’ 2008 tournament run.
Junior forward
Niki Tomita (PICTURED RIGHT)
was tabbed the 2010 MIAC Player of the Year in a vote by conference coaches. An All-Region performer in 2009, she is second on the Knights in goals (8) this season while tying for the team lead in assists (5). Forward
Marlena Hartman-Filson paces the squad with 12 goals, including scores in both playoff games and joins Tomita, defender

Needing a regular-season finale win just to secure a berth in the MWC Tournament, Lawrence responded with an 8-3 victory at Ripon College. The third-seeded Vikings then knocked off second-seed Lake Forest with a game-winning goal by Koula in the final six minutes. Koula then scored both goals in the tournament championship game at Carroll.
