Tacoma, Wash. -- The Wheaton women's soccer team wrapped up its weekend in Washington State today, facing undefeated University of Puget Sound in a non-conference matchup for the first time since 2021. The Thunder narrowly lost with a final score of 1-0, bringing their record to 1-4 overall. Puget Sound improved to 3-0-1 on the year with Saturday's result.
The Loggers came out aggressively in this afternoon's fixture, registering their first shot on goal just over two minutes into the game - an attempt that was thwarted by a save from Wheaton goalkeeper, Leah Roe. The match remained scoreless for nearly two-thirds of the 90 minutes, with Roe making three more saves in that span. In the 63rd minute, the hosts attempted a shot that was initially blocked by a Wheaton defender. However, the deflection fell to UPS midfielder Kate Short right in front of the net to score her team's first and only goal of the game.
The Wheaton defense held strong for the remainder of the match against their talented opponents, with Roe registering another save. But the Thunder were ultimately unable to even the score.
Out of Puget Sound's 24 total efforts, Roe faced six shots on goal this evening, making five saves in her 90-minute appearance. The Wheaton back line cut off three additional attempts, making blocks before the ball could reach their shot-stopper. The home side's sustained attacking momentum resulted in 13 corner kicks and a decisive advantage in ball possession on Saturday.
After a unique weekend twinbill, the Thunder will return home next week, facing Saint Mary's College at Joe Bean Stadium in their next contest on Wednesday at 7:00 PM.
