Wheaton, Ill. -- After beginning the 2026 season with three matches away from home, the Wheaton men's soccer team took to the Joe Bean Stadium turf for the first time on Friday night to open this year's Bob Baptista Invitational. The Thunder welcomed Pacific Lutheran University to town for only their second-ever meeting in Wheaton, and the visiting Lutes netted a goal in either half to win tonight's contest, 2-0. PLU improved to 2-1 on the young season with Friday's result, while Wheaton slipped to 1-3 overall.
The Thunder came from behind to defeat tonight's opponent, 2-1, in Washington last year. But they could not manage to do so after falling behind on this occasion, as the Lutes stifled their hosts' attack in the first half and did just enough in the second to preserve the shutout win.
The first shot attempt, corner kick, and effort on goal were all tallied by the NWC side, and the guests' strong start was rewarded when the scoring was opened in the 15th minute. The ball made its way to PLU's attacking midfielder in space outside the right side of the box, and his subsequent cross was met perfectly by the same player who netted in the Lutes' home defeat to Wheaton last September.
Craig Rusin was responsible for both of his team's shot attempts in the first half, flashing a well-struck volley past the left post and stinging the goalkeeper's gloves with an effort just before the break. But PLU largely limited Wheaton's offensive capabilities and took a 1-0 advantage into the locker room without creating many attacking opportunities itself.
The Thunder found more momentum in the final third after the interval and posted 11 shots in the second 45 as they sought to tie the score back up at 1-1. But a combination of alert goalkeeping and unfortunate finishing luck in front of goal prevented the hosts from ever finding the equalizer, and the deficit was doubled in the 65th minute by a long-range piledriver that snuck inside the near post. Both teams registered two more efforts on target in the closing minutes of the match, but the Lutes held firm at the back and picked up a solid road victory to spoil the opening night festivities.
Wheaton edged the shooting count on Friday with 13 total attempts to Pacific Lutheran's 11 and put six efforts on frame compared to the visitors' four. The Thunder also took four more corner kicks and enjoyed a healthy 59-41% possession disparity. But the Lutes' physicality played a role in the outcome this evening, as PLU was called for 12 fouls and shown two yellow cards amid attempts to unsettle the hosts' playing style.

Luke McGuire made two stops in the Thunder net.
Wheaton will play at home for the second night in a row on Saturday when it closes out its four-team invitational against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. The Stags fell, 1-0, to North Park in Friday's first match, and kick-off between the Thunder and the SCIAC program is set for 7:00 PM at Bean Stadium.
