Lisle, Ill. – The Wheaton softball team traveled to nearby Benedictine University on Tuesday afternoon for a non-conference doubleheader against the Eagles. The hosts rallied in the final two innings to win the first game 6-3. BenU accomplished the sweep with a 10-1 victory against the Thunder in the nightcap.
The Eagles won the first game 6-3 as the Eagles scored six runs, on six hits, with two errors and the Thunder scored three runs, on five hits, with two errors. Thunder starting pitcher
Shylah Dozeman pitched 5-1/3 innings as she allowed six runs, including five earned runs on six hits.
Iris Jones pitched 2/3 of an inning of scoreless relief.
Catcher Madeline Hillyer was 2-for-2 and a walk as she scored a run.
Mia Reinhard hit a double as
Abby Whitehead and
Kennedy Kemp each hit s single as Kemp scored a run and drove in a run.
Benedictine scored the game's first run in the bottom of the first inning. Wheaton tied the game at 1-1 on a RBI-single by Kemp in the top of the second inning.
Nori Kang drove in Hillyer when she drew a bases loaded walk in the top of the fourth inning and Whitehead drove in Kemp to give the Thunder a 3-1 lead.
The Eagles scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 4-3 lead. Benedictine added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to account for the 6-3 final score.
Benedictine won the second game 10-1 as the Eagles scored 10 runs, on 10 hits, with no errors. Wheaton registered one run, on five hits, with one error. Five of Benedictine's runs in the game were unearned.
The Eagles led 5-0 through two innings. Wheaton scored its lone run of the game in the top of the third inning on a RBI-double by Reinhard. The Eagles scored five unearned runs in the bottom of the third inning. The Eagles closed out the game as it ended in the fifth.
Wheaton hosts Carroll in a CCIW doubleheader tomorrow afternoon at Ruth Leedy Field. The doubleheader against the Pioneers starts at 2:00 p.m.
