Montgomery, Ill. – The Wheaton baseball team faced Aurora University on Tuesday night in a non-conference road contest that was originally scheduled for April 16 but was moved to tonight due to weather at the time. Aurora won tonight's make-up game 20-6 in seven innings.
Wheaton returns to action tomorrow night at Lee Pfund Stadium hosting Illinois Wesleyan in the CCIW regular season finale for the Thunder at 6:00 p.m. Tomorrow's game is a key matchup for the Thunder; with a win the squad is virtually assured a spot in next week's six-team CCIW Tournament.
In Aurora's 20-6 victory tonight, the Spartans scored 20 runs, on 14 hits, with one error. Wheaton scored six runs, on seven hits, with six errors.
Third baseman
Will Clegg was 2-for-3 at the plate with a home run. He drove in four of Wheaton's six runs and scored twice. Outfielder Sean Dmyotrowiczwas 2-for-4, scoring once.
Chris Lynam hit a double for the guests, while
Mason Diel and pinch hitter
Michael Chang were both 1-for-1 with each hitting a single.
Wheaton took an early 2-0 lead thanks to Clegg's two-run home run to right centerfield in the top of the first inning. Aurora responded with one unearned run in the bottom of the first to cut Wheaton's lead to 2-1.
The Spartans added five runs in the bottom of the third inning to take a 6-2 lead. The hosts added seven more runs in the bottom of the fourth to increase their lead to 13-2.
Wheaton responded with four runs in the top of the fifth inning to cut Aurora's lead to 13-6. Clegg hit a two-run single in the inning. Lynam belted a two-run double that brought Clegg home and shortstop
Jack Gill also drove in one run.
Aurora scored three unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, and the hosts added four more runs in the sixth to account for the 20-6 final score.
