Thunder baseball falls in road matchup at Illinois Wesleyan

Bloomington, Ill. – The Wheaton baseball team traveled to Illinois Wesleyan for a CCIW matchup against the Titans on Tuesday night. The Titans (14-18, 7-9 CCIW) scored six runs in their final two innings to earn a 9-7 victory against the Thunder (13-18, 8-6 CCIW).

Illinois Wesleyan scored nine runs, on 11 hits, with zero errors and Wheaton plated seven runs on eight hits, with three errors. Freshman starting pitcher Jamin Van Grouw pitched five innings tonight as he allowed two earned runs, on six hits, with four walks and one strikeout. Josh Ortiz tossed 1/3 of an inning in relief. He allowed one runs, on one hit, with two strikeouts. Billy Kessler pitched 1-1/3 innings of relief, allowing three earned runs, on two hits, with one walk. JD Van Hook took the loss in 1-1/3 innings of relief. He allowed three runs, on two hits, with one walk and one strikeout.

Charlie Scofield was 2-for-4 for the Thunder with a double as he drove in one run and scored once. Tyler Burr was 2-for-4, scoring twice. Nathan Hedlund hit a home run for the guests.

Wheaton scored twice in the top of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. Scofield hit a RBI-double in the inning and Braden Engel drew a bases loaded walk to bring a run home. The Titans scored one run in the bottom of the first to cut the Thunder lead to 2-1. The hosts tied the game at 2-2 with one run in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Hedlund hit a two-run home run in the top of the sixth inning, and Jack Gill followed later in the inning with a two-run single as Wheaton took a 6-2 lead. The hosts responded with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning to cut Wheaton's lead to 6-3.

Illinois Wesleyan scored three times in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie the game at 6-6. IWU took the lead with a three-run home run in the bottom of the eighth as IWU went up 9-6. Engle hit a RBI-single for Wheaton in the top of the ninth inning to cut the hosts' lead to 9-7, but the Thunder could not get closer.

Wheaton returns home on Friday as the team hosts Carroll for a 6:00 p.m. matchup at Lee Pfund Stadium in Carol Stream.
