Lookout Mountain, Ga. – Wheaton baseball concluded its four-game series against Covenant College by dropping both contests on Saturday, 10-7 and 13-3, in two seven-inning games. The losses move the Thunder to 1-3 on the season.
Game one saw
David Levengood start on the mound. He completed four solid innings, allowing four runs on five hits while striking out two and walking three. The Thunder opened the scoring in the second inning with RBI from both
Caleb Schauer and
James Scott, who stayed hot after reaching safely in every plate appearance in the previous contest.
Covenant responded with two runs on a double by leadoff hitter Roby McClarnon, but a fantastic relay from Scott and shortstop
Jack Gill prevented a third run and ended the inning.
Schauer opened the fourth inning with a solo home run on the first pitch he saw. The blast was the first of his career and highlighted a 3-for-4 performance in game one. An RBI single from Ty Burr extended the Thunder lead as Wheaton entered the bottom of the fourth ahead 6-2.
The hosts answered with two-consecutive singles that both came around to score, one on a sacrifice fly and the other on a double. Levengood settled in after that, striking out the next batter with three straight sliders and inducing a groundout on a first pitch changeup.
Sean Dmytrowicz later drove in Schauer with help from the wet grass. The ball struck the turf, took a strange hop, and skipped past the center fielder, allowing Schauer to score from first.
Alex Bagley relieved Levengood and delivered a clean inning while striking out two. The following frame created more damage for Covenant, as two singles and two hit batters loaded the bases.
Jack Lindsay entered and allowed one run before Bill Kessler took over and minimized the damage. Covenant ultimately scored six runs in the sixth inning to take a 10-7 lead they would not relinquish.
Wheaton finished with 11 hits and three walks while striking out only twice. The pitching staff allowed 10 earned runs on eight hits, striking out four and walking five.
Schauer went 3-for-4 with a home run, two singles, three runs scored, and an RBI. Burr finished 2-for-3 with two singles and a walk, and Scott went 2-for-4 with a double, a single, and two RBI.
The second game began with Covenant launching four home runs over the first three innings, building an early seven-run cushion. Wheaton's only runs came in the sixth inning when Scott cleared the bases with a triple. Covenant added one final run to cap the scoring.
Cole Daggett,
Josh Ortiz, and
Caleb Henderson combined to cover seven innings. Daggett struck out one, Ortiz struck out four, and Henderson added one strikeout.
Covenant recorded nine hits, seven of which went for extra bases. The Scots also drew eight walks while striking out six times. Their starter consistently pounded the zone, generated quick outs, and struck out five. Covenant's defense was also clean, committing no errors.
Wheaton recorded four hits and three walks while striking out six times. Scott finished 1-for-3 with a triple and three RBI, and Burr went 1-for-2 with a double and a walk.
Wheaton will travel to Danville, Kentucky next weekend to face Centre College, Dominican University, and Brevard College. First pitch against Centre is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. (EST) on Friday.
