Wheaton football announces the Shaffer-LoChirco Special Teams Player of the Year Award

10/1/2026 11:19:00 PM

This fall, Wheaton Football is establishing the Shaffer-LoChirco Special Teams Player of the Year Award in memory of Jalen Shaffer and Philip LoChirco. Shaffer ('22) and LoChirco ('23) passed away on June 13. Shaffer, 26, played four seasons at Wheaton in five years, while LoChirco, 24, played three seasons over four years.

Wheaton head coach Jesse Scott says, "Jalen and Philip were significant contributors to Wheaton Football. Far more importantly, they were beloved teammates who made the people around them better. They cared deeply about pursuing excellence and had a contagious desire for others to know and love Jesus."

Beginning at the conclusion of the 2026 season, the Shaffer-LoChirco Special Teams Player of the Year Award  award will be presented annually to our Special Teams Player of the Year, recognizing outstanding contributions on the field while honoring the selflessness, humility, and enthusiasm that marked Jalen and Philip's lives.

Scott says, "While we certainly want to honor and remember Jalen and Phil, we want future generations of Wheaton Football players to know and be inspired by their commitment to the Gospel. This award will create a continual opportunity to do just that." Coach Scott concludes, "At our Homecoming game, we will observe a brief moment of silence, honor Jalen and Phil's legacy, and formally introduce the award. We continue to grieve alongside their families and friends, and remain grateful for the hope we have in Jesus."

The pregame ceremony at Homecoming will occur at approximately 12:35 p.m. at McCully Stadium, prior to kickoff of Wheaton's 1:00 p.m. game against North Park.
