On Saturday night at halftime of the Wheaton men's soccer match against No. 15 ranked Calvin University, Wheaton men's soccer will honor the 2006 Thunder men's soccer team that finished as National Runner-Up.
In 2006, Wheaton won the CCIW Men's Soccer Tournament as its number-three seed to earn the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Wheaton defeated Carthage 3-1 in the semifinal and Augustana 3-0 in the CCIW Championship to secure the bid.
In the opening weekend of the National Tournament, Wheaton defeated WashU and University of Redlands in Saint Louis to continue on to the Sectional round in York, Pennsylvania. At the Sectional, Wheaton defeated Wartburg, 2-1 and advanced out of a penalty kick shootout against the host Spartans of York College, 3-2 after the two teams played to a 0-0 draw in regulation and two overtime periods.
Wheaton faced Ohio Wesleyan University at the NCAA Division III Semifinals in Orlando, Florida as Joel DeLass scored the goal in a 1-0 win that advanced Wheaton to its fourth all-time Division III National Championship match. Messiah won the national championship match in Orlando as Wheaton finished as National Runner-up for the second time.
Wheaton had a strong postseason in 2006 out-scoring opponents 8-2 in the first five matches of the NCAA Tournament with three shutouts.
That incredible 2006 NCAA Tournament run also marked the final matches in the legendary career of Wheaton Coach Joe Bean. Following the National Championship match, Bean's retirement was official and he departed an outstanding career with 607 career victories, the most in the history of NCAA Men's Soccer at the time. Coach Bean said at the Finals in Orlando, "It means a lot to me that my last team will be the one that I remember the most."
