Wheaton, Ill. – After handling Coe College yesterday, the Wheaton women's tennis team remained at home for its final regular season match against Rose-Hulman, the Thunder's first matchup against the Fightin' Engineers since 2011. Wheaton took care of business by winning 6-1 and improved to 13-5 on the season. Meanwhile, Rose-Hulman had its four-match winning streak snapped as the visitors dropped to 7-10 overall.
Wheaton swept the doubles portion of the match as the #1 pair of
Madeline Gentry and
Lydia Adams along with the #2 duo of
Tatum Thurstone and
Ella Malone battled from early 0-2 holes to take their matches, 6-2. In #3 doubles,
Alexandra Wachs and
Janet Kondo were down 1-3 after four games before climbing back to win, 6-3.
As the match turned to the singles portion, Wheaton had no problem against the competition, winning five of the six solo fixtures in straight sets. Gentry only dropped one game in her entire singles match as she won, 6-1, 6-0 in #1 singles. Wachs doubled up for the day with a pair of 6-2 frames at #2, and Adams was victorious at the third position via a line of 6-4, 6-2. Malone rallied to win the rest of her games to prevail, 6-3, 6-0 after losing the first three at #4 singles. Thurstone joined her doubles partner with a set sweep victory in the #5 spot, winning 6-0, 6-1.
Wheaton was scheduled to face Division II opponent Roosevelt University this Tuesday at the Wheaton Tennis Courts for its last match of the regular season, but Roosevelt was forced to back out of the contest due to a player shortage. Therefore, Saturday's win now stands as the Thunder's final contest of the regular season, and the Wheaton women will next be in action at the 2025 CCIW Tournament. The Thunder are scheduled to face the Augustana College Vikings in a quarterfinal match in Bloomington on Thursday, April 24
th. Wheaton swept Augie, 7-0, in their regular season meeting in Rock Island back in September.
