Wheaton, Ill. – The Wheaton softball team hosted Monmouth College (Ill.) on Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference doubleheader at Ruth Leedy Field. The Thunder won the opener 17-5 and Wheaton completed the sweep with a 9-1 victory in the nightcap. The sweep of the twinbill was the second-consecutive doubleheader sweep for the Thunder following Saturday's sweep at home of Principia College.
Wheaton won today's first game in five innings as the Thunder scored 17 runs, on 15 hits, with three errors. Monmouth recorded five runs, on nine hits, with five errors.
Shylah Dozeman earned the win in the circle in 4-2/3 innings of relief. Dozeman allowed two runs, on seven hits, with two walks and two strikeouts.
Sophomore leftfielder
Abby Whitehead was 4-for-4, with four RBI and four runs scored. Whitehead belted a home run and a double in her offensive onslaught.
Livi Figueroa was 2-for-2 with a walk as she drove in two runs and scored once.
Paige Andrews was 2-for-3, with a double and a walk as she scored three runs scored and drove in one run. Freshman
Soleil Weaver was 2-for-3 with three RBI and one run.
Megan Mosier was also 2-for-3, scoring once and driving in one run.
Monmouth scored three runs in the top of the first inning to gain an early lead. Wheaton responded with six runs in the bottom of the first inning to gain the lead. Weaver had a two-run double to highlight the inning for Wheaton, while Dozeman and Mosier each hit a RBI-single.
The Fighting Scots cut Wheaton's lead to 6-5 with two runs in the top of the second inning. The Thunder added three runs in the bottom of the second to increase the hosts' lead to 9-5. Whitehead drove in two runs with a RBI-double and Weaver added a run with a sacrifice fly.
Dozeman held Monmouth scoreless in the top of the third inning, and the Thunder added four runs in the bottom of the third to increase the hosts' lead to 13-5. Figueroa hit a RBI-single to highlight the inning that saw the Fighting Scots commit three costly errors.
Dozeman again kept Monmouth off the scoreboard in the top of the fourth inning. Wheaton added four more runs in the bottom of the fourth to increase its lead to 17-5. Whitehead hit a two-run homer over the leftfield fence and Andrews added a RBI-double in the inning. Dozeman tossed her third-consecutive scoreless inning in the top of the fifth inning as Wheaton won the game in five innings on the run-rule.
The Thunder won the second game 9-1 with nine runs, on six hits, with no errors and Monmouth tallied one run, on six hits, with one error.
Victoria Barbar earned the win in the circle as she pitched three scoreless innings, allowing two hits, with two walks.
Kennedy Kemp pitched two innings as she allowed one run, on three hits, with two walks and one strikeout.
Kemp helped was 2-for-2 at the plate, with a walk, a double, four RBI and a run scored. Mosier was 1-for-1 with a run scored and a RBI.
Olivia Nahorniak hit a home run as she was 1-for-2, with a walk as she drove in two runs and scored once.
The Thunder offense scored in each of its four innings in the nightcap. Wheaton gained a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as Kemp drew a bases loaded walk. The Thunder added two runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a 3-0 lead. Both of Wheaton's runs in the inning crossed the plate on a two-run homer by Nahorniak.
The Thunder lead increased to 6-0 as the hosts scored three more runs in the bottom of the third inning. Weaver drove in a run with a RBI-single, Barbar drove in one run with a sacrifice fly and Mosier also drove in a run with a sacrifice bunt.
Monmouth scored its first run in the top of the fourth inning to cut Wheaton's lead to 6-1. The Thunder responded with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to extend the lead 9-1. Kemp hit a dramatic three-run double in the fourth inning to highlight Wheaton's offensive output. Kemp kept the Fighting Scots off the scoreboard in the top of the fifth inning to secure the run-rule victory for the hosts.
Wheaton takes to the road tomorrow for a non-conference doubleheader at Rockford. The Thunder return home on Saturday for a non-conference twinbill against Olivet.
