Melbourne, Fla. - The Wheaton College softball teams concluded its eight-game trip to Florida on Thursday afternoon with a pair of games. Nebraska Wesleyan defeated the Thunder 13-3 in today's opener and the trip wrapped with a 4-0 victory by Marietta College against Wheaton.
Nebraska Wesleyan topped the Thunder 13-3 in six innings in today's first game. The Prairie Wolves scored 13 runs, on 12 hits, with two errors. Wheaton scored three runs, on four hits, with three errors. The three Thunder errors proved costly as five of NWU's 13 runs were unearned.
Abby Whitehead was 1-for-3 with two RBI.
Isabel Hillyer,
Olivia Nahorniak, and
Kennedy Kemp each had a hit, and scored one run against Nebraska Wesleyan.
The Prairie Wolves led 6-0 heading into the bottom of the third inning. Wheaton scored three runs in the bottom of the third to trim the NWU lead to 6-3. Whitehead hit a two-run single, and
Paige Andrews drove in a run on a sacrifice fly. NWU added a run in the top of the fifth inning and they tallied six runs in the top of the sixth to account for the 13-3 final score.
Marietta College topped the Thunder 4-0 in the trip finale. The Pioneers scored four runs, on five hits, with no errors. Wheaton had zero runs, on one hit, with no errors.
Victoria Barbar pitched 2-2/3 innings, allowing three runs, on three hits.
Shylah Dozeman pitched/3 innings of relief as she allowed one run, on two hits. Kemp worked on inning of scoreless innings relief, as she did not allow a hit.
Whitehead hit a leadoff single to open the top of the fifth and break up the no-hit by Marietta pitcher, Camryn Kiefer.
Wheaton travels to Concordia University Chicago on March 18 for a doubleheader. The twinbill against the Cougars begins at 2:30 p.m.
