Fort Pierce, Fla. – The Thunder baseball team continued its Spring Break trip in Florida on Tuesday with a matchup against Wabash College. The Little Giants topped the Thunder 6-2 in the meeting. Wheaton's varsity unit is off until Friday when the Thunder plays a doubleheader against Westfield State University at Lawnwood Baseball Complex.
Wabash earned today's 6-2 victory as the Little Giants scored six runs, on seven hits, with one error. The Thunder tallied two runs, on four hits, with one error. Thunder starting pitcher
JD Van Hook allowed three runs, on four hits, with two strikeouts and one walk.
Josh Ortiz replaced Van Hook replaced. Ortiz worked 3-1/3 innings as he allowed two runs, on two hits, with six strikeouts and four walks.
Jack Lindsay tossed 1-2/3 innings of relief, allowing one run, on one hit, with two walks and two strikeouts.
Nathan Hedlund hit a home run, and
Donovan Williams added a double to account for Wheaton's extra-base hit in the game.
Rutledge Feltel and
Noah Yi each hit a single in the contest. Feltel and Hedlund each scored a run, while
Jack Gill and Hedlund each drove in one run.
Wheaton scored first with one run in the top of the second inning. Feltel led off the second with a single to right field. Hedlund and
Tim Whitfield were each hit by pitches in their respective at bats to load the bases with no outs. Gill hit a fly ball to deep centerfield that brought Feltel home on the sacrifice fly and a 1-0 Thunder lead. A double play ended Wheaton's portion of the second inning with the Thunder leading 1-0. Wabash scored one run on a sacrifice bunt and a second run on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the second to gain a 2-1 lead after two innings.
Wabash increased its lead to 3-1 on a sacrifice fly in the bottom off the third inning. A pair of Thunder runs scored on a wild pitch in fourth inning to extend the Little Giants' lead to 5-1. Neither team scored in the next three innings and then Wabash added a run in the bottom of the eighth inning to increase their lead to 6-1. Hedlund hit a solo home run over the leftfield fence in the top of the ninth inning to account for the 6-2 final score.
