Wheaton, Ill. – Another record-setting performance by Tess Boyer highlighted the Wheaton College women's swimming and diving team's efforts as the Thunder placed second overall at the Wheaton Invite on Saturday.
The team standings were topped by Grove City College with 999 points, followed by Wheaton with 737 points in the seven-team invite.
The Thunder snagged a trio of individual victories on the last day of the three-day meet. Boyer was dominant in the 400-yard IM – the junior broke her own school record in 4:23.23 to beat the field by 16 seconds. She set a new meet record and produced an NCAA provisional qualifying time as well.
In the first contested final of the afternoon, senior Olivia Wiebe sailed past the competition in the 1,650-yard freestyle and won by 32 seconds (18:05.51). The 50-yard freestyle also produced a Wheaton winner, as sophomore Aubrey Swanson claimed the top spot in a time of 24.28.
The 400-yard freestyle relay team topped the podium with a winning time of 3:34.39. Relay members included freshman Allison Henschel, freshman Kate Zurowski, Swanson and Boyer.
The Thunder claimed runner-up status in three additional races. Junior Kara Grace Hess recorded a mark of 59.94 in the 100-yard butterfly to grab second. Wheaton finished second and third in the 100-yard backstroke with senior Savannah Jeffery (1:00.27) and Zurowski (1:00.43). The 200-yard medley relay took second (1:49.50) with the team of Jeffery, freshman Lydia Hansen, Hess and Swanson.
Henschel contributed a third-place showing in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:33.11) as well as a fourth-place performance in the 200-yard freestyle (1:59.41). Hansen was fourth in the 200 breaststroke right behind Henschel at 2:35.12.
Wheaton will return to competition on January 17 with the Illinois-Michigan Quad Meet in Kalamazoo, Mich.
