Wheaton, Ill. - Wheaton women's soccer team looked to get back on the winning side of conference play, facing Illinois Wesleyan at Joe Bean Stadium on Wednesday night. Wheaton has won three of the last five contests versus the Titans, with each home team winning their respective matches. The two longtime conference foes battled to a 0-0 draw over tonight's 90 minutes. Wednesday's draw moved Illinois Wesleyan to 5-5-2 and Wheaton became an even 4-4-4, ending the win streak of the home team in this matchup.
The first 10 minutes of the match were a stalemate. Illinois Wesleyan was able to get off the first shot on frame after nobody was able to settle it. The Titans got a shot off that was done away by Wheaton goalkeeper
Leah Roe. Wheaton kept the ball on the attacking side early on, never able to create an advantageous opportunity, but putting themselves in a position to create some important chances. Often, swarming the Titans' offense as they crossed midfield and gaining possession as quickly as they had lost it.
The first shot on goal for Wheaton came from
Lily Lindquist in the 18
th minute when she was able to maneuver her way through two Titan defenders and took a shot from just outside the penalty box that was ultimately saved by the Titans' keeper.
The first half ended 0-0 as neither team was truly able to gain momentum. Both sides played two very different styles, with Wheaton's attack being a slow build-up, consistent passing in the Titans' zone, seeking the perfect opportunity. They were able to get some shots off as the half closed but could not challenge the Illinois Wesleyan goalie quite enough. As for the Titans, their chances came in flashes, possessing the ball only 43% of the time, but they never found a way to maintain the ball to continuously pressure the Thunder defense. This lines up with season trends as the Titans came in with an average of nine first half shots compared to Wheaton's three.
The Thunder opened the second half with a flurry of shots on net from
Annika Lindquist,
Emily Setran, and
Olivia Martin off a corner in the first eight minutes of the half.
The next 20 minutes were dominated by Wheaton, with
Cami Tofilon recording another shot on net and the Titans recording zero. The time of possession story was also largely the same between the two halves as the Thunder continued to maintain pressure, keeping Roe unbothered in Wheaton's net.
Illinois Wesleyan had a valiant effort in the 85
th minute in an attack that hit off the post twice and then a team save booted away by the Thunder that ultimately ended in a corner for the final chance of the game between both teams.
The match ended in a 0-0 draw for Wheaton's eighth clean sheet of the season. The Thunder ended up leading in shots (13-10) and possession 59-41%. Tofilon led in shots on goal with two,
Lily Lindquist, Martin, Setran, and
Annika Lindquist each had one. Roe made four saves as she added to her conference-leading clean sheet number.
Wheaton's next conference meeting will be in Rock Island to take on Augustana at 1:00 p.m. this Saturday.
