Bloomington, Ill. – The Wheaton women's basketball team traveled to second-ranked Illinois Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon for a CCIW tilt with the Titans. Illinois Wesleyan (18-0, 9-0 CCIW) pulled away from the Thunder early in the contest as the hosts earned a 93-57 victory. Wheaton is now 9-9 on the year with a 4-5 record in CCIW play. The Thunder remain on the road next Wednesday in a CCIW matchup at North Park.
Annika Richardson led the Thunder with 12 points today at Illinois Wesleyan.
Lily Caddow and
Kate Oliver each scored eight points, as Oliver added a team-high four assists.
Alyssa Faberowski,
Petra Trumbach and
Lauryn Ham each added six points. Caddow and
Jenna Hunter tied for Wheaton's rebounding lead with five caroms apiece.
Ava Bardic led Illinois Wesleyan with 19 points, and Mallory Powers added 17 points for the hosts. Lauren Huber scored 12 points and Catie Knutson scored 10 points. Powers had a game-high seven assists and Huber led all players with eight rebounds.
Wheaton posted a 32.8% (19-of-58) field goal percentage, including 37.5% (9-of-24) from three-point range. The Titans shot 53.7% (36-of-67) from the field, including 44.4% (12-of-27) behind the three-point arc. The Thunder shot a perfect 100% (10-for-10) at the free throw line, while the Titans shot 81.8% (9-of-11) at the charity stripe. Illinois Wesleyan out-rebounded the Titans 38-32, with each team collecting 12 rebounds.
The Thunder led 6-5 after the first two and a half minutes of the game. However, the Titans responded with as 12-3 run to take a 17-9 lead with 3:30 remaining in the first quarter as the hosts led for the remainder of the contest.
Richardson led Wheaton's first-half scoring with eight points and Faberowski grabbed three rebounds. Bardic scored 13 points with five assists in the first half to lead the Titans.
