GAME STATS Waukesha, Wis. – The Thunder baseball team traveled to Wisconsin on Friday evening to start a three-game series against the Carroll University Pioneers (8-14, 3-4 CCIW). Carroll scored a pair of runs in the eighth inning to break a 2-2 tie and give the hosts a 4-2 victory.
Wheaton (7-15, 1-6 CCIW) returns to Lee Pfund Stadium in Carol Stream on Saturday to close out the three-game series against the Pioneers. Tomorrow's doubleheader begins at 1:00 p.m.
Carroll rallied to earn the 4-2 victory tonight as the hosts scored four runs, on five hits, with zero errors. Wheaton tallied two runs, on eight hits, with no errors. Freshman starting pitcher
Alex Bagley (1-3) pitched 7-1/3 innings tonight. He allowed four runs, on five hits, with four strikeouts and three walks. Senior
John McCraith pitched 2/3 of an inning in relief as he struck out one with no walks and no hits allowed.
Senior second baseman
Kyle Wu was 4-for-4 at the plate tonight. Outfielder
Joe Klein was 2-for-4 with a double as he scored one run.
Mason Diel and
Matt Nelson each hit a double for the guests, while Nelson and
Jacob Snyder each stole a base.
Carroll scored twice in the bottom of the first inning to gain an early 2-0 lead. Klein led off the top of the second inning with a double and he advanced to third base two batters later on a single by Wu. A walk to catcher
Luke Hamm loaded the bases and Nelson drew a walk that brought Klein home to cut the Carroll lead to 2-1.
Snyder led off the top of the third inning with an infield single and stole second base in the next at bat. He advanced to third base on a single to right centerfield by Klein. A fielder's choice hit by Diel brough Klein home to tie the game at 2-2.
The game remained even at 2-2 until the bottom of the eighth inning. A two-run double for Pioneers with one out, gave the hosts a 4-2 lead. Wheaton went three-up-and-three-down in the top of the ninth as Carrol's closer secured the win for the hosts.
