Softball splits a pair in day two in Florida

GAME STATS 1 | GAME STATS 2 Clermont, Fla. – The Wheaton softball team continued its eight-game trip to Central Florida on Tuesday with a pair of games. The Thunder dropped a 4-0 matchup against Dominican University early on Monday morning. Wheaton wrapped up the day by rallying in a 2-1 victory against Thomas College. The Thunder improve to 3-1 on the young season heading into games tomorrow against Wittenberg and Saint Vincent.

Dominican shut out the Thunder in today's first game, 4-0. The Stars scored four runs, on eight hits, with no errors and the Thunder had no runs, on three hits, with no errors. Thunder starting pitcher Alese Antonello (1-1) pitched all seven innings. She allowed four earned runs, scattering eight hits, with four walks and a strikeout.

Olivia Nahorniak was 1-for-3 with a doubles. Abigail Latka and Madie Handyside each added a single to account for Wheaton's three hits in the game.

The Stars gained the lead with one run in the top of the second inning. Dominican added two runs in the top of the third and one more run in the top of the fifth to account for the 4-0 final score.

In the second game on Tuesday, Wheaton rallied to earn a 2-1 victory against Thomas College. The Thunder scored two runs, on 10 hits, with one error. The Terriers scored one run, on nine hits, with no errors. Freshman Shylah Dozeman (2-0) earned the win in 6-1/3 innings in the circle. She allowed one run, with no earned runs, on nine hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Antonello picked up her second save of the season in 2/3 of an inning of relief. She did not allow a batter to reach base in securing the win for the Thunder.

Abby Whitehead was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Madison Forberg was 2-for-3 at the plate. Elizbeth Meyer hit a single, scored a run and stole a base. Nahorniak scored a run and drove a run, hitting a single.

Thomas scored a run in the bottom of the first inning. Wheaton responded to gain the lead with two runs in the top of the seventh inning. Forberg led off the inning with a single and Elizabeth Meyer reached on a fielder's choice in the next at bat. Meyer tied the game when she scored on a single by Nahorniak. Whitehead stepped up to the plate in the next at bat and hit a two-out double to rightfield that brought Nahorniak home for the go-ahead run.
