Thunder volleyball sweeps Lake Forest and Loras to close 2024 with a winning record

Lake Forest, Ill. – The Wheaton College volleyball team concluded its 2024 season on Saturday with a pair of matches at the Lake Forest College Triangular. The Thunder opened the day with a 3-0 victory against the host Foresters of Lake Forest College (4-21). Wheaton's final match of the day, and the season, was a 3-0 sweep of Loras College (15-14).

Wheaton's two victories today give the Thunder volleyball team a 15-14 overall record for the 2024 season. First-year head coach Eric Plunkett's team concludes the campaign with Wheaton's first winning season since 2019 when the Thunder posted a 17-13 record.

In today's opener, a 3-0 victory against Lake Forest, Wheaton won the first set 25-21, followed by a 25-13 win in the second set and the Thunder accomplished the sweep by winning the third set 25-18. Senior outside hitter Caroline Capps recorded 13 kills, with no errors as she tallied a sensational .619 attack percentage. Emerson Traweek added six kills, and Bree Gilbert had five. Setter Lacey Higgins had 28 assists for the Thunder, and Sarah Sanderson contributed three service aces.

In the 3-0 sweep of Loras, the Thunder won the first set 25-22, followed by a 25-13 win in the second set and a 25-14 win in the third set to achieve its second sweep of the day. Capps closed out her career with 12 kills against the Duhawks. Traweek tallied 10 kills in her final match. Jordan Benford tallied eight kills, with seven kills by Ashton Major.  Higgins had 35 assists, and she had a team-high three service aces. Traweek and Higgins each had a team-high nine digs for Wheaton, while Capps had a match-high three total blocks.

Note Worthy: Capps concludes the season with a .285 attack percentage, the sixth-highest single season percentage in program history for a player with 600 or more attacks in a campaign…Capps averaged 2.83 kills per set in her Thunder career, a mark that ranks 10th on the program's career list….in her three seasons at Wheaton, Higgins has recorded 1,870 career assists to move into 11th place on the programs all-time assists list.
