MEQUON, Wis. – The Wheaton College wrestling team posted a pair of individual podium finishes at the 30th-annual Concordia University (Wis.) Open on Saturday.

The Thunder had 17 wrestlers in action in the 16-team field. The top performer of the day was graduate student Jackson Punzel, who raced through his opening bouts at 197 pounds. He picked up a trio of technical falls with dominating scores of 17-2, 19-2 and 19-1. In the bracket semifinals, Punzel dispatched his University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse opponent via technical fall with an 18-3 score. However, he was defeated in the championship match by the No. 1 seed from Wabash College, who did not surrender a single point in five matches.

His first two matches ended with a 17-2 technical fall and a first-period pin. In the consolation bracket, Zamora picked up close victories 5-3 and 6-4 before absorbing a loss in the third-place match against Wartburg College.
