ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Caroline Stetina and Sophia Huber paced the Wheaton College women's cross country team to a sixth-place finish at the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional Championship on Saturday.
The women's 6K race featured 28 teams and 210 total runners at Saukie Golf Course. University of Chicago ran away with the team title (36 points) thanks to five finishers in the top 11 placements.
The Thunder were sixth in the final standings with 208 points, sandwiched between conference foes Illinois Wesleyan University in fifth and North Central College in seventh.
Stetina and Huber both achieved All-Region status after finishing 32nd and 33rd, respectively. They crossed the line two seconds apart at 22:51.0 and 22:53.2.
Wheaton also received top 50-placements from Elizabeth LaBrin (47th) in 23:22.3, Natalie Conrad (49th) in 23:25.5 and Louisa Brorson (50th) in 23:32.8. The lineup was rounded out by Abby Rickard (55th, 23:45.5) and Sarah Quintanilla (108th, 24:46.8).
With the sixth-place team showing, the Thunder have a chance at qualifying for the 2024 Division III Championship meet. The championship selections will be released on Sunday, Nov. 17 on NCAA.com. The NCAA national meet features 32 teams per gender – 10 regional champions on each side will automatically qualify while the remaining 22 will be at-large picks.
The NCAA championship race will be hosted at LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in Terra Haute, Ind. on Saturday, Nov. 23.
