Wheaton, Ill. – The Wheaton women's soccer team hosted Augustana for a CCIW matchup on Saturday night at Joe Bean Stadium. The Thunder players and coaches honored the team's three seniors for "Senior Night" prior to the start of the match against the Vikings. Wheaton earned a 2-0 victory against Augustana in a strong evening for the hosts.
The Thunder scored early in the contest to gain an early 1-0 lead. Wheaton's first shot attempt of the evening came at the 8:35 mark of the match off the foot of
Grace Crowder.
Katherine Ashley's corner kick was tapped to Crowder by
Emily Setran and Crowder blasted the ball into the lower right corner of the net, past Augustana goalkeeper Sara Schinker to give Wheaton the 1-0 lead
(VIDEO). Crowder's goal held up for the remainder of the first half as Wheaton led 1-0 at the halftime intermission. Wheaton out-shot the Vikings 8-3 in the first half, with each team getting a shot on goal in the opening half.
Augustana was awarded a penalty kick just 23-seconds into the second half on a foul against Wheaton in the penalty area. The PK attempt was deftly stopped by Wheaton's freshman goalkeeper
Elizabeth Netz to keep her team in its 1-0 lead
(VIDEO). Less than 10 minutes later, Wheaton secured its second goal to give the hosts a 2-0 lead. Setran again assisted on the goal as her long pass from outside the penalty area was untouched as it found the foot of freshman
Kate Creighton in front of the net. Creighton directed the ball into the net for her first collegiate goal
(VIDEO). Wheaton kept the Vikings off the scoreboard for the remainder of the match to secure the 2-0 victory.
Netz made two saves in recording her fourth shutout of the season. Schinker stopped three Wheaton goals and allowed both Wheaton goals in her 90 minutes in the Vikings' net.
Wheaton out shot Augustana 19-6 in tonight's contest as the host had a 5-2 advantage in shots on goal. Wheaton was awarded eight corner kicks and Augustana took two.
Wheaton remains at home for its next match as the Thunder host Carthage on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. in a CCIW match at Joe Bean Stadium.
