Thunder volleyball hosts No. 4 Calvin in Wheaton's home opener

 Wheaton, Ill. – The Wheaton volleyball team (1-3) hosted fourth-ranked Calvin University (4-0) on Tuesday night in King Arena. The Knights defeated the Thunder 3-0 (25-16, 25-17, 25-22).

Caroline Capps led the Thunder with 13 kills and Emerson Traweek added nine. Ashton Major tallied four kills and Bree Gilbert registered three. Lacey Higgins distributed 31 assists for the hosts and Major recorded two service aces. Capps had a team-high 10 digs, as Major had a solo block and an assisted block. Higgins tallied two assisted blocks.

The Knights rallied to win the first set 25-16. Wheaton scored the first four points of the match and led 7-5 when Calvin responded with five-consecutive points to give the guests a 10-7. The Knights scored eight-consecutive points to conclude the set. Gilbert, Capps and Traweek each had three kills apiece for the hosts. Higgins distributed 10 assists and Katie Stotts had five digs in the set.

Calvin again overcame an early deficit to win the second set 25-17. Wheaton led 8-4 when the Knights tallied seven-consecutive points to take an 11-8 lead. The guests never relinquished the lead after that point. Capps led the hosts with four kills in the set and Higgins had eight assists.

The guests won the drama-filled third set 25-22. Calvin scored the first four points of the set and they built up a 14-9 lead. Wheaton responded with five-consecutive points to tie the set at 14-14. The tying point was an impressive kill by Traweek to knot the set at 14-14. The two teams continued to battle back-and-forth playing to a 20-20 tie. The Knights scored two-straight points to take a 22-20 lead, and the guests held on to earn the 25-22 win. Capps registered a set-best six kills in the final set, and Traweek added four. Higgins distributed 13 assists, and Benford led the Thunder with four digs in the set.

Wheaton remains at home tomorrow night for a non-conference match against Wisconsin Lutheran. The Thunder and the Warriors are slated to start at 7:00 p.m. in King Arena.
