Kenosha, Wis. – The Wheaton baseball team traveled across the state line on Wednesday for a CCIW game against Carthage College. The Firebirds defeated the Thunder 16-6 in seven innings. Wheaton (11-9, 3-1 CCIW) will face Carroll this weekend in a three-game series. The Thunder host the Pioneers for a doubleheader on Friday at Le Pfund Stadium. The opening game of the twinbill starts at 1:00 p.m. The series will conclude on Saturday in Waukesha, Wisconsin with a single game at 1:00 p.im.
The Firebirds won today's matchup 16-6 as Carthage scored 16 runs, on 14 hits, with zero errors while the Thunder tallied six runs, on seven hits, with two errors. Shortstop
Matthias Haggerty was 2-for-4, with a home run and a double as he drove in three runs, scoring once. Centerfielder
Ben Weaver was 2-for-3, scoring twice with a double to his credit.
Each team scored one run in its respective half of the first inning. Wheaton's run in the first inning came from a one-run double with two outs by Haggerty. Carthage scored three runs in the bottom of the second inning to increase the hosts' lead to 4-1. The Firebirds added six more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to extend the hosts' lead to 10-1.
Carthage scored twice in the bottom of the fifth inning to increase its lead to 12-1. The Thunder tallied five runs in the top of the sixth inning to cut the hosts' lead to 12-6.
Jacob Snyder blasted a three-run home run in the sixth, and Haggerty hit a two-run homer in the inning to boost the Thunder offense.
Carthage responded with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and one run in the seventh to end the game as a 16-6 final result.
