Naperville, Ill. -- The 2023 CCIW Women's Tennis Championship got underway across two different locations on Thursday morning, and the Wheaton Thunder took on the North Park Vikings in the quarterfinal round at the Naperville Tennis Club. The Thunder came into the competition as the third overall seed, and their Chicago opponents were the sixth-seeded team in the field based on the teams' regular season records. Wheaton defeated North Park without dropping a point back in October, and that proved to be the case again in today's postseason meeting, as the Thunder swept the Vikings with a 5-0 decision to book their place in the semifinals. Wheaton's record is now 16-4 on the season, and Thursday's victory assures the team of the program's best full-season record since at least 2017-18.
Wheaton claimed all three doubles match wins to get their tournament residency off to the perfect start.
Lydia Adams and
Abygale Ahn earned an 8-5 victory at #1 doubles, while
Janet Kondo and
Audrey Vick put in a dominant 8-0 performance in the second position.
Lily Anne Van Ye and
Alexandra Wachs continued their fine form at #3 doubles with an 8-1 result.
Because postseason matches are ended abruptly once a team reaches five points, the Thunder only required two wins in the singles competitions in Thursday's contest. Those two points came courtesy of
Lydia Adams and
Lily Anne Van Ye, who earned flawless, double-bagel victories at #4 and #6 singles, respectively.
Having opened the tournament with an ideal result, Wheaton's attention will now turn to Friday's semifinal matchup. The Thunder are set to face second-seeded Millikin at 12:45 PM in Naperville.
