Men's Tennis falls to UW-Whitewater in first match of weekend series

Lake Geneva, Wis. -- Traveling north this weekend to take part in Wisconsin-Whitewater's Warhawk Invite, the Thunder men's tennis team was defeated by the hosting Warhawks this afternoon by a score of 6-3. Tim Steiner and Jack Wenzel combined for Wheaton's lone win in the doubles category, before Jack Booker and Wenzel earned the visitors' two singles decisions. Wheaton's record now sits at 2-2 for the season.

The Thunder almost began the event with a win in their #1 doubles pairing, but Booker and Cody Ching were narrowly edged out by their Whitewater opponents at 8-7. Steiner and Wenzel prevented a Warhawk sweep in the doubles competition by claiming their #3 fixture at the same 8-7 scoreline.

Booker impressively held off a late charge by his #1 singles opponent to take their match in three sets. The junior from Indianapolis won the first set, 7-5, before falling in a tiebreaker in the next frame. But Booker held his nerve in the decisive set to win 11-9 and pick up his first #1 singles win of the season. Wenzel earned Wheaton's third point of the matchup when his #4 singles rival retired towards the end of their first set.

Wheaton will look to get back to winning ways in their pair of contests on Saturday, as the Thunder face Grinnell College at 9:00 AM in Lake Geneva and Luther College at 5:30 PM.
