Whitewater, Wis. – The Wheaton women's basketball team traveled north on Saturday to face fifth-ranked UW-Whitewater (9-0) in a non-conference matchup. The Warhawks defeated the Thunder 73-45 as Wheaton falls to 6-3 on the season.
Annie Tate led Wheaton with 17 points and six rebounds.
Kate Oliver scored 10 points off the Thunder bench, adding five rebounds.
Caroline Sikkink tallied eight points with four rebounds for the guests.
Annika Richardson led the Thunder on the glass with eight rebounds.
The Thunder shot 30% (18-of-60) from the field, including a 1-of-12 effort from three-point range. UW-Whitewater posted a 43.8% (28-of-64) field goal percentage, including 30% (6-of-20) behind the three-point arc. The Warhawks shot 68.8% (11-of-16) at the free throw line and Wheaton had a 53.3% (8-of-15) effort at the charity stripe. The hosts out-rebounded Wheaton 46-39, with a 14-13 edge on the offensive glass for the Thunder. Wheaton had 18 turnovers tonight as the Warhawks out-scored the Thunder 24-4 in points off of turnovers.
The Warhawks never trailed in today's match as the hosts jumped out to a 10-2 lead over the first four minutes of the game. UW-Whitewater led the Thunder 20-11 at the end of the first period. The hosts extended their strong first-half play into the second quarter, out-scoring Wheaton 18-9 in the second period. UW-Whitewater led Wheaton 38-20 at the halftime break. Tate led the Thunder with nine first-half points and Richardson grabbed six rebounds in the first 20 minutes.
UW-Whitewater out-scored Wheaton 19-9 in the third quarter. The hosts led the Thunder 57-29 at the conclusion of the third quarter. Each team scored 16 points in the fourth quarter of today's contest, resulting in the 73-45 final score.
Aleah Grundahl led UW-Whitewater with 15 points, seven rebounds, and three steals. Kacie Carrollo scored 14 points for the hosts, with nine rebounds, and seven assists.
Wheaton hosts Concordia (Wis.) next Friday in a non-conference matchup. The contest between the Thunder and the Falcons will tip off at 5:00 p.m. in King Arena.
