Decatur, Ill. -- Fresh off of their 9-0 victory at Illinois Wesleyan on Friday evening, the Thunder women's tennis team returned to the courts this afternoon for their fall season finale against the Millikin Big Blue. In a match that was ultimately ended early due to court availability time restrictions, Wheaton once again won all of the doubles and singles contests to end their 2023 schedule in dominant fashion. The Thunder head into the winter break with an overall record of 8-2 and a CCIW mark of 7-1 thanks to today's win.
Lydia Adams and
Madeline Gentry were again victorious in the #1 doubles position, edging out their Millikin rivals in a competitive 8-6 set.
Delaney Canning and
Janet Kondo stayed in their #2 pairing from yesterday's win and notched an 8-4 decision on Saturday.
Tatum Thurstone and
Alexandra Wachs earned a convincing 8-3 result in the #3 doubles spot.
Gentry took the first set of her #1 singles match at 6-4 but needed to dig deep to claim a 14-12 third-game tiebreak win.
Audrey Vick did not put a foot wrong in the final weekend of the fall, earning her second-straight 6-0, 6-0 victory at #2 singles. Wachs joined Vick's perfection in her #3 match, double-bageling her Big Blue opponent to post her second point of the day. Adams secured a comprehensive 6-0, 6-2 victory at #4 singles, and Canning registered the same result in her #6 singles match. Kondo was on track to make it a full 9-0 sweep for the Thunder when her #5 singles match was prematurely cut short.
Wheaton has finished the regular season in second place in the conference standings, so the Thunder know that they will be the #2 seed in next April's CCIW Championship in Bloomington. The Wheaton women's squad will return to competition in February of 2024.
