Wheaton, Ill. – The Wheaton wrestling team hosted Concordia University (Wis.) on Saturday afternoon for a dual match in King Arena. The Falcon topped the Thunder 26-15. Wheaton won four of the 10 matches today, including victories in three of the first four contests.
Anthony Zamora picked up Wheaton's first win on Saturday as he defeated Concordia's 125-pounder, Devin Gore in a 6-3 decision in the opening match of the day.
Brendan Johnston gave Wheaton a 6-0 lead in the team score as he defeated Emilio Acosta in a 3-1 decision in their match at 133-pounds.
Concordia earned a major decision at 141-pounds to give the Falcons their first points of the day.
Cale Coppess won by fall at the 4:07 mark of his match against Concordia's Frank Budederi at 149-pounds. Coppess' impressive win gave the hosts a 12-4 lead in the team score. Concordia earned wins in the next four matches to give the hosts a 22-12 lead.
Senior
Jackson Punzel gave the Thunder their final win of the day in the matchup at 197-pounds. Punzel won a 9-1 major decision against Concordia's Peyton Smith to trim Concordia's lead to 22-16. Concordia's Dalton Sell won the match at 285-pounds to account for the 25-16 final score.
The Thunder return to action next Saturday at Elmhurst's Al Hanke Invitational. Wrestling starts at 9:30 a.m. next Saturday afternoon.
