Wheaton, Ill. – The Wheaton women's basketball team hosted Carroll University on Wednesday night in a battle for second place in the CCIW Women's Basketball standings. The Pioneers earned the 71-49 victory on Wheaton's homecourt to give Carroll (11-6, 6-2 CCIW) sole possession of second place in the conference standings. Wheaton is now 10-7 on the season with a 5-3 record in CCIW play.
Annika Richardson led the Thunder with 13 points and six rebounds in tonight's matchup against the Pioneers.
Caroline Sikkink scored 11 points, with eight rebounds, and four assists.
Ellie Cassel scored eight points with three assists off the Wheaton bench and freshman
Kate Oliver added seven points, with three assists.
Alexis Martin tallied six points, making a pair of three-pointers.
Wheaton shot 38.6% (22-of-57) from the field, including 28.6% (4-for-14) from three-point range. Carroll posted a 48.1% (25-of-52) field goal percentage, including 35.3% (6-of-17) behind the three-point arc. Carroll shot 68.2% (15-of-22) at the free throw line and Wheaton was 1-for-10 at the stripe. Carroll out-rebounded the Thunder 38-33, with a 10-7 edge on the offensive glass for Wheaton.
Carroll utilized a press for much of the game, forcing Wheaton into 22 turnovers. The Pioneers out-scored Wheaton 22-11 in points off of turnovers.
Olivia Rangel and Brooke Foster each scored 13 points to lead Carroll in scoring. Natalie Gricius added 11 points off the guests' bench. Allison Thompson scored 10 points with nine rebounds.
Wheaton returns to action on Saturday night at 5:00 p.m. as the Thunder entertain Illinois Wesleyan in King Arena.
