Thunder softball hosts Carroll for a conference doubleheader

Wheaton, Ill. – The Wheaton softball team hosted Carroll on Thursday afternoon for a CCIW doubleheader at Ruth Leedy Field. Carroll (16-8, 8-2 CCIW) swept the twinbill as the Pioneers won the first game 13-11 in 11 innings and the guests won the second game 4-1 in six innings. Wheaton (14-18, 2-10 CCIW) travels to Carthage next Tuesday for its next contest.
 
Carroll defeated the Thunder 13-11 in 11 innings in today's first game. The Pioneers scored 13 runs, on 14 hits, with six errors and Wheaton tallied 11 runs, on 17 hits, with two errors. Thunder starting pitcher Emilie Gist worked 11 innings as she allowed 13 runs, including 11 earned runs.
 
Gist was 3-for-5 at the plate, with a home run, drawing a walk scoring four runs, with three RBI. Olivia Nahorniak was 3-for-5, with a double, a walk, two RBI and a run scored. Claire Busch was 3-for-6, with a RBI. Elise O'Neil, Paige Andrews and Elizabeth Meyer each collected two hits for the hosts.
 
Carroll scored four runs in the top of the first inning. Wheaton trimmed the Pioneers' early lead to 4-2 with a pair of runs for the hosts in the bottom of the first, as Nahorniak hit a two-run double. Carroll extended its lead to 7-2 with three runs in the top of the fourth inning. Wheaton added two runs in the bottom of the fourth as Andrews and Sydney Heinrich each drove in a run to trim the guests lead to 7-4.
 
The Thunder scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to tie the contest at 7-7. Busch, Heinrich and O'Neil each hit RBI singles for the hosts in the fifth. Carroll scored four runs in the top of the sixth inning to take an 11-7 lead. O'Neil hit a RBI-single in the bottom of the sixth inning to trim the guests' lead to 11-8.
Gist walked up to the plate in the bottom of the seventh inning with two outs and blasted a three-run home run with over the centerfield fence to tie the game at 11-11. The two squads played three scoreless innings in extra innings, until the Pioneers tallied two runs in the top of the 11th inning to account for the 13-11 final score.   
 
Carroll won the nightcap 4-1 in a contest that was called in the sixth inning due to darkness. The Pioneers scored four runs, on five hits, with one error, and Wheaton tallied one run on five hits, with no errors. Alese Antonello pitched five innings for the Thunder, allowing four runs, on five hits, with two strikeouts and three walks. Olivia Nahorniak was 3-for-3, in the game as she hit a solo home run.
 
Carroll took an early lead with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Pioneers added a run in the bottom of the third inning to take a 3-0 lead. Nahorniak hit her solo home run in the top of the fourth inning to cut the Carroll lead to 3-1. The Pioneers added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth inning that would eventually become the final score.
