Hanover Park, Ill. - The Wheaton women's tennis team returned to action on Thursday evening as the Thunder hosted St. Mary's College (Ind.) at Center Court Athletic Club. The hosts defeated the Belles 9-0. Wheaton improves to 13-5 on the season, while St. Mary's is 4-8.
The Thunder and Belles were originally scheduled to play March 9 in Orlando, Florida during each program's Spring Break, but that contest was rained out.
Wheaton swept the Belles in doubles competition. The Thunder No. 1 doubles team of
Abygale Ahn and
Audrey Vick defeated Alayna Campbell and Lucy Chamberlain, 8-5.
Bethany Hoogerheide and
Lydia Adams teamed up for an 8-2 victory at No. 2 doubles against Kalyn Borger and Meredith Heckert. The hosts' No. 3 doubles team of
Sarah Backer and
Lily Anne Van Ye defeated Kathleen McLeod and Nikki Rust 8-2.
Ahn was a 6-1, 6-4 victor at No. 1 singles against Chamberlain. Vick defeated Campbell 6-3, 6-0 in their matchup at No. 2 singles. Hoogerheide bested Heckert 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3 singles, while Backer earned a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles against McLeod. In the match at No. 5 singles,
Alexandra Wachs defeated Katie Hunter, 6-1, 6-0. Adams was a 6-1, 6-0 victor against Nikki Rust at No. 6 singles.
The Thunder return to action on Saturday afternoon with another non-conference match against a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) opponent. Wheaton travels to Kalamazoo College on Saturday for the contest against the Hornets, scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. (EDT).
